From The Aesop's Fables : Father & Sons

A man had several sons who were always quarrelling with one another, and he tried to get them to live together in harmony, but he could not. So he thought of something to make them realized what they were doing was wrong. He asked them to fetch a bundle of sticks, he invited each son to break the sticks acroos his knee. All tried and all failed: and then he undid the bundle and handed them the sticks one by one. They had no difficulty at all in breaking them. He told the boys: 'There my boys if you will be more united you will be able to defeat the enemies: but if you quarrel and separate, your weakness will put you at the mercy of those who attack you.'

Union is strength.
